Dragonball Deformation – Bandai

Dragonball Deformation by Bandai

Series: Dragonball Z / Dragonball GT / Dragonball Kai

Company: Bandai

Size: +/- 6 cm

Main distribution: Japan

This a series of chibi Dragonball characters made by Bandai. They are about 3 heads tall rather than 2. They all come on a black base which has the character’s name on it. Deformation relates to the chibi nature of the figures, as chibi is also often called SD or Super Deformed. These came in blind boxes so it would be a surprise which one you would get.

Various series of 9 or 10 figures with a bonus 10th or 11th chaser figure were produced. The last series only had 8 figures and no bonus one, and came on red bases rather than black ones.

Dragonball Deformation by Bandai base

The branding is under the base. It reads © B/S·F·T B.CHINA. It would also have a number and display the #number of the figure of the set. It also has the 4 dot Bandai stamp.

I bought these early 2010s in an anime shop in Amsterdam. I hadn’t bought much Dragonball stuff anymore, and had started to focus on only getting my favourites now. They had marked which figures were in the box so it wouldn’t be a blind box. I bought 2 boxes of series 6; Vegeta and Trunks, as they were my favourite characters.

A little later while having lunch in the city, I opened them up to look at my purchases. I found out that Vegeta was actually Goku! They must have seen the spikey hair and got him mixed up. Now I don’t like Goku so this was a disappointment, but then I realised he was the rare bonus figure. And I do like him in the armour. So I decided to keep him and go back and get another “Vegeta”. This time it was actually Vegeta, so I ended up with these 3 of the series.

At this point I had gotten over the 2 heads tall chibi look. But 3 heads tall still looks cute to me. Some smaller characters like young Gohan and Krillin don’t even look that deformed. I also heard some of these figures scale nicely with the 5 inch action figures. What I really like though is the Super Saiyan hair paint job, it reminds me of the HG figures. Something about that light colour with a slight shimmer is just perfect for Super Saiyan in my opinion, and reminds me of the original anime.

I quite like the look of these chunky boys, and would like to get a few more of them. Not all, just my favourites.

If you like small figurines or chibi’s these are quite good. They have nice detail and a lovely paint job. If this isn’t your cup of tea, you might want to look for other series to get.

Got any more details / information you think I should add? Or did I get something wrong? Do you own any of these figures? Which one is your fav? Do you agree or disagree with my findings? Let me know in the comments below!
