The Pocket Monster Collection, MonCollé, MonCollé-Ex or simply Tomy figures are small figures that are highly collectable. The series has been running from the 90s and is still running now. They have been distributed worldwide and have seen various releases and re-releases in various packs. They come often in “toy sets” and are therefor generally found in generic toy stores and supermarkets instead of the more niche geek shops. In Japan these figures come also in stand alone packs.
In this blog post you’ll find all the Gen I / Kanto region Pokémon, people and accessories I own. These releases span from the very first ones to the recent ones.
The very first figures of Gen I are my favourite. I’m still trying to catch them all. When Pokémon Go and Pokémon Sun & Moon came out, Gen I got a reboost and new figures were released. I have sorted them below; First the Pokémon by Pokédex number, then the people and lastly accessories.
The figures I currently own are below. All photo’s are my own of my own figures and no stock photos were used. As you can see, not all my figures are in perfect condition.
I got 96/151 different Pokémon. I have 145 Pokémon figures listed here with all the alternatives.
At the very bottom I’ll also post some packaging of the figures.

Pokéball
This Pokéball is from the 90s. It’s a simple ball that exists out of 2 halves that can be separated. The top red half is transparant.
The original concept had Pokémon in Gashapon-like balls, and these look very much like that. The game never clearly showed it, and the anime changed it however. It uses the same mold as the Masterball, therefor has 2 red circles on top.
There is a little attachment with a hole on the back. I’m guessing so you can add a string and attach it to your belt?
The branding is on the top in a circle. It reads © 任天堂 / C / G TOMY.
Great Ball – Throw ‘N’ Pop
This Great Ball was released in 2016 and came in a Throw ‘N’ Pop toy pack that included Pikachu / Charmander from the Pokémon Go / Sun & Moon series which I purchased in 2017 and 2018 in the UK at Smyths.
It’s a weird, spring-loaded ball that turns itself inside out with little pressure. The inside has stars on the sides, like a dice. The idea is you put a figure inside and fold the ball around it. Then you and your opponent “throw” the ball on a surface like a dice, and the figure will “pop” out. The one with the most stars on the top wins. Basically a dice game and the highest roll is the winner. The ball came with instructions.
The branding is on the inside. On one side it has in black printed text: T19111 J0516TTN05 / T19145 G0317TTN05. On another side is in raised font: ©2016 Pokémon / Nintendo TOMY MADE IN CHINA EX25AZ, UK.
Masterball
This Masterball is from the 90s. It’s a simple ball that exists out of 2 halves that can be separated. Both halves are transparant, apart from the pink circles on top.
The original concept had Pokémon in Gashapon-like balls, and these look very much like that. The game never clearly showed it, and the anime changed it however.
There is a little attachment with a hole on the back. I’m guessing so you can add a string and attach it to your belt?

The figures came in various packs and series.
In the 90s and most of the early Western merchandise, these came in figure packs with a classic red and blue packaging. A Pokémon came with their Trainer, or a 2 stage Pokémon came with balls, or a 3 stage Pokémon came with a plastic Gameboy that shot a Pokéball on a string, or they came in a 5 pack.
In Japan, they sell figures separate in the MonCollé collection. It has a black cardboard with a number, and the figure is behind plastic.
Later series are called MonCollé-Ex, and come with a blue cardboard with a number. The figure is behind plastic as well.
During the Pokémon Go craze, Tomy released a series with a blue packaging with a jumping / running Pikachu on it. These ran around 2015~2016.
Above shows a Throw ‘N’ Pop pack. It came with a figure and a spring loaded Pokéball. There were also duo packs of these with 2 figures and 2 Pokéballs.
The back showed a child playing with it as well as others in the line.
When Pokémon Sun & Moon got released, Tomy released a series with an orange (sun) and dark blue (moon) packaging with a jumping Pikachu. These ran around 2016~2018. Some of the previous figures of the blue packaging were in these as well.
Above shows a Clip ‘N’ Carry. It came with a figure and a Pokéball that could be clipped on a belt. There was also a pack with several of these with a belt.
The back showed a child playing with it as well as others in the line. They retail for around £10~12.
Above shows a Versus pack. It came with two figures and were posed for battle. The back showed others in the serie. They retailed for £7~10.
Above shows a Throw ‘N’ Pop pack again, this time with the Sun & Moon colours. It’s no longer called “Throw ‘N’ Pop” but simply the Pokémon + Pokéball names.
It came with a figure and a spring loaded Pokéball.
The back showed a child playing with it as well as others in the line. The same photo is used as for the previous Pokémon Go line.

The Tomy figures were one of the first Pokémon merchandise I could get my hands on as a kid. There wasn’t much in my home town and I was too young to travel to bigger cities. The Internet was also not really a thing yet, and definitely not at my home. I bought all I could find and tried to get them all, which till this day I have not succeeded in. I then tried to focus on getting all the Pikachu, which also seems impossible!
With the release of Pokémon Go and Pokémon Sun & Moon, Gen I suddenly got a revive and Tomy released more Gen I figures again. I’ve been trying to catch em all, as the Tomy figures are still my favourite Pokémon figures. In 2019 Tomy lost the Pokémon license in the West. This makes it harder to get more Gen I figures as they would have to be imported from Japan.
I do find the first release from the 90s still the best. They look so unique with their airbrushed look and high gloss. It gave it more of a watercolour look which is closer to Ken Sugimori’s art. Over time, the Pokémon started to look more like their animated counterpart rather than the game, and the game itself started to look more like the animation as well. The figures lost their nice gloss, and feel cheaper because of it. I even feel their paint jobs are getting worse. Still, I love them.
The original Pokéballs are also so unique looking with their transparency. As someone who loves Gashapon, I would have loved the idea of these monsters in Gashapon balls. But I can see why this was changed.
My favourites to this day are surfing Pikachu and the Pokédoll.
The hidden surfing Pikachu mini-game in Pokémon Yellow I loved (despite the clear Excitebike clone) and the figure looks amazing. I bought it in one of my favourite shops in the early days when I was allowed to go to a “big” city.
At my local swimming pool was a gashapon machine with derpy fake Pokémons keychains in. Every week I was allowed to get one, and they were all horrible looking! One derpier than the other, barely recognisable as the Pokémon it was trying to represent sometimes. I’ve gotten rid of them since. But I also got the Pokédoll. It was so different looking from the other derps, like it actually looked good! I never saw any other Pokédoll merchandise so I loved it. I then found out it was based on a legit Tomy figure and I had to have it! But I never found it. And then I spotted it in a random figure lot for cheap. So I bought the lot, purely for this figure. I love it. And I kept the fake one as well. They are just so cute.
Gen I Tomy will always be the best Pokémon figures for me.
Got any more details / information you think I should add? Or did I get something wrong? Do you own any of these figures? Which one is your fav? Do you agree or disagree with my findings? Let me know in the comments below!
