Irwin Toy, a Canadian distributor and manufacturer of toys, and FUNimation, the packaging firm that licenses and packages Dragonball and Dragonball Z for North America, joined forces to create IF Labs, a Fort Worth-based toy company that produced toys based on the Dragonball Z Movies and tv series. They created the Movie / Fusion Collection. In 2002 Irwin Toy went bankrupt, and Jakks Pacific took over the line, creating many more series of these.

In total 19 series were made for the Movie Collection. However, Jakks Pacific took over from series 4. Here I’ll only show the Movie Collection from Jakks Pacific, so from series 4 onwards. For the first 3 series, look here.

The packaging changed from series 5 onward from its unique cylindrical shape to a standard box. It still had a large see-through area at the front showcasing the figure.

Series 4 Movie Collection

Dragonball Z / GT Movie Collection – Jakks Pacific Series 4 box

Series 4 consisted out of 4 figures; Vegeta, Trunks, Android #13 and Super Android #13.
All 4 figures were based on the movie Dragonball Z: Super Android 13!, ドラゴンボールゼットきょくげんバトル!!さんだいスーパーサイヤじん Doragon Bōru Zetto Kyokugen Batoru!! San Dai Sūpā Saiya-jin (Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Battle!! The Three Great Super Saiyans), also referred to as Dragonball Z: Super Battle of Three Super Saiyans, which is the 7th Dragonball Z movie and the 10th Dragonball movie overall.

Dragonball Z / GT Movie Collection – Jakks Pacific Series 4 Android #13

Android #13 is wearing his signature outfit. His vest is made from rubber, giving it a cool 3D and realistic effect. He has a smirk on his face. His hands are two fists. He is very detailed, with veins etc. and has nice shading. He has articulation in his head, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, upper legs and knees. Android #13 comes with a blue plastic base. Unlike the IF labs figures, the base does not have a peg, nor does Android #13 have a hole in his feet to attach him. He also comes with several accessories; a hat, 2 Red Ribbon Army bombs and 3 Red Ribbon Army chips.

Dragonball Z / GT Movie Collection – Jakks Pacific Series 4 Android #13 accessories

The hat looks nice and detailed, with seam lines and shading. It’s made out of rubber or another flexible material, and works great on the figure. The 2 bombs and 3 small chips are a quirky addition, but fits with Android #13 as he absorbs these to turn into Super Android #13.

I remember seeing the ads for these on my Dragonball Z dvds of FUNimation. Apparently this is what collectors wanted. The detail was unlike anything made prior. And of course, like the collector teen I was, needed to have these.

I tried to get them all initially, but quickly lost interest. They were expensive, and I started to dislike the Americanised, “realistic” figures. So after the first 3 series, I just kinda stopped.

Android #13 was the last one I got. I’m surprised I even found it in a shop, as I rarely saw anything Jakks Pacific here. I didn’t even realise how many more of these were made until I made this blog entry. It seemed like the quality went down, and a lot of re-releases and re-colours were produced though.

Android #13 however, looks really good. His face isn’t derpy like some of them. His hat is cool, and he has nice details. Definitely one of the better ones in my opinion. Shame it’s a character I don’t care much for though.

These figures seem to be a hit and miss for me. This isn’t strange, considering I feel the same about McFarlane figures and these are based on that. I’m still keeping them for now for nostalgic reasons. I’m glad I didn’t get more of Jakks Pacific ones though!

Got any more details / information you think I should add? Or did I get something wrong? Do you own any of these figures? Which one is your fav? Do you agree or disagree with my findings? Let me know in the comments below!
