This is a sleeping Pikachu plush from Tomy. Tomy has done many Pikachu in various poses, and this is one of its latest.
The plush is laying down and around 20 cm long from its nose to its butt. It has the iconic colours of the anime Pikachu, with embroidered features. It has a relaxed face expression, with closed eyes and an open mouth, and its ears hang droopy as if asleep.
The tail is floppy and quite flat, it doesn’t seem stuffed. However the extra brown fabric at the base of the tail gives it some sturdiness, enough to even prop the tail up for a moment.
It has a standard Tomy tush tag. It had a hang tag in its ear that was blue with a sleeping Pikachu image on it, as well as the Tomy logo.
Anyone that knows me knows I have a small Sleeping Pikachu collection. The Sleepy Chu are sort of my main collection of Pokémon I suppose. A small group of them sleeps in the bedroom. They all look so relaxed and comfy!
So when Tomy did a sleeping Pikachu again, I wanted to add it to the group. Although not my favourite sleeping Pikachu, his hanging ears are by far my favourite feature. It makes him seem somehow deeper asleep then when its ears are perked up.
What I don’t like about this Pikachu though is its body. It seems strangely long compared to the head, or maybe the head is too small? Or perhaps the neck is too odd? I can’t put my finger on it, but something is off proportionally that bugs me.
The USA seemed to have gotten this plush first, with the UK and main Europe following a couple of months later. It retailed in the UK for £10~15 and was fairly common to get. I think I found mine in either the local toy shop or the local supermarket’s toy section (may have even gotten some discount due to some sale).
This plush is clearly more aimed at children then collectors, and feels cheaper than some of my others. All in all it’s not my best sleeping Pikachu, but good and cheap enough to add to the collection.
