Sylvanian Families (シルバニアファミリー, Shirubania Famirī) (Calico Critters in the USA) is a line of collectible anthropomorphic animal flocked figures that have been created by the Japanese company Epoch since 1985. They have since 2019 made blindbags with babies in it, with each series having a theme.
Due to the nature of a blindbag, you never know which critter you’re going to get. Inside the bag the figure is encased in a little plastic box, so it’s impossible to feel what’s inside. It also comes with a little leaflet, so you know who else is in the series.
12 series have been made so far with 8 or 9 figures, often including a mystery one;

I love Sylvanian Families, but never cared much for all the babies (there’s too many of them!). I also don’t like the crawling posed ones (animals don’t crawl like human babies). Nor not knowing what I’m buying. So I stayed well away from the blind bags, despite liking the outdoors, camping and treat ones a lot!
However, feeling down from having broken my ankle, I bought the “Love from… Sylvanian Families” magazine. It’s a magazine with a different theme each month, and this time it was Sylvanian Families. It had colour pages and posters, and came with a notepad, pencils, erasers and a blind bag. I figured the colouring pages and poster might be nice, and the stationary goodies were fun. The blind bag was a nice extra too.
Unfortunately I find the Fun Hair series the worst of them all (animals with human style hair) but it is what it is. Thankfully I got a nice, standing up character with joints. Unfortunately, she was placed wrong in the box and has a “scar” on her arm where the box pressed into the flocking. The tight elastic in the dress has also embedded in the flocking around her waist. And when using the wig I noticed you’d easily damage the flocking on her head and ears. Still, it was one of the eight I’d actually would have liked, so I can’t complain too much. And you can’t go too wrong with Sylvanian Families, seeing they are cute little flocked jointed animal figures.
When I saw the Forest Costume series, I thought they were cute. All the animals are standing up, apart from the koala but koala’s do sit / hang like that so I don’t mind it. Their accessories are also all very cute and things I’m into. So when I saw one on sale (the last one), and knowing I would like any of them, I bought one. It also features a koala which I saw as a sign as I’m heading Down Under soon. And I got the same cat again. At least the mushroom cap is adorable.
Will I get more of the baby blindbags though? Who knows.
If you like Sylvanian Families, flocked animal figures, blindbags and babies, these are great for you. They are relatively cheap and make it easy to expand families.
If you prefer bigger figures, or like me, not crawling animal babies, these might not be for you.
Got any more details / information you think I should add? Or did I get something wrong? Do you buy any Sylvanian Families Babies Blind Bags? Which one is your fav? Do you agree or disagree with my findings? Let me know in the comments below!
